Weather was cooler than normal and the biggest variable to the fishers was a severe cold front with very heavy rain & high winds.

Long time guest Tony Majcher from Hawthorne Woods, Il returned for his 1^st trip with us in 2014. 1^st day on the water he found the Smallmouth Bass very aggressive on surface presentations but at 11:00 AM they shut down. 2^nd day Tony did well catching

Smallmouth Bass on the surface using a Chug Bug. Nothing better than watching a surface lure in anticipation of that surface strike from a Smallie. He caught a Trophy measuring 18” and a HUGE 37” Northern Pike plus managed to get a good picture of each even though he was by himself. Third day was a good Northern Pike day having very good action on a #10 X-Rap & Tony had the destroyed lure in his hand to prove it. On the 4^th and final day Tony had a fabulous finish hooking 24 Smallmouth Bass and landing 17, most 15-17.5” with one being an 18.5” Trophy. Great finish to a wonderful trip & we look forward to Tony returning this August with his Grandson.

Guest since 1994 Gerald Adams from Shawnee, OK was back with his son Zack to chase Smallmouth Bass. First day was spent figuring out a pattern while catching a dozen Smallmouth Bass. 2^nd day was

better as they caught 20. 3^rd day Gerald had fast action catching 3 Trophy Smallmouth within an hour including a 18, 18.25, and a 19”er. 3^rd day was about the same. The 4^th day Gerald was on fire as he caught 9 big Smallmouth in about 75 minutes including several 17-17.5”, an 18”, 18.5” and 19”. Last day they finished strong catching 47 Smallmouth Bass with all but 2 being 15-17.5”. As much as these two enjoy their fishing they equally enjoy the story telling & conversation in the lodge and the wonderful one on one father and son time together. Even after almost 20 years they can’t get enough of this time spent together & with others. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to make some of your memorable moments together.

Father & Son Terry & Jeff Milberger from Shawnee, KS were fishing with us for their 1^st time. Had a great first day ever on Little Vermilion Lake catching a good number of Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike. 2^nd day was a fabulous day as they caught plenty of fish and enjoyed a shore lunch cooked over an open fire at Twin Falls. You could tell by the smiles on their faces that Terry & Jeff had a special day together. 3rd and final day, (3-days goes by fast!), they finished catching a mix of Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass and expressed how much fun they had a suppertime. Both made wonderful father & son memories, which I have said many times is the biggest catch of all. Thanks for spending this special time together at Fireside Lodge.

Long time guests Ken Beta & Jim Nelson from Fox Lake and Oak Brook, IL were back to have great fun fishing in the Canadian Wilderness, a tradition of theirs for the last 45 years. 1^st day the Smallies were slow as the colder water was still delaying their spawning activity, however the did catch a few along with some Northern Pike and Ken lucked into a HUGE 38.5” Lake Trout with an enormous girth. Unfortunately both forgot to bring a camera. Second day they did much better with the Smallmouth Bass but still sighted more than they caught. 3^rd day had them catching a mix of Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike, and they said the bass were still not aggressive but starting to show signs of spawning, which the water has not warmed enough to set off this yearly event. 4^th day had them having a great Smallmouth Bass day catching 27 good size Smallies, and a few Northern Pike. Their 5^th day was a wash as they faced 43F with very heavy rain & high winds all day. They enjoyed their last day by playing cribbage and gin rummy. It has been very nice to have these two as guests for so many years & hope to see them again.

1st Muskie Fishing by Glen Marks

2^nd year return guest Glen Marks brought a good friend and work partner Rick Gabehart for his first Canadian Fishing Adventure, both from Middletown, CA. 1^st day out they caught many Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike and after strategizing by the map Rick was planning there second day. They caught more Pike and Smallies and Glen hit a milestone landing his first ever Muskie. Congrats to Glenn for patience and perseverance. 3^rd day was a good Northern Pike day and had Rick catching his personal best at 34”. 4^th day was a great day as they caught BIG Northern Pike 32 to 37 inches, Rick landing the 37”er & Glen landed 1-32” Lake Trout. 5^th day cold front conditions dropping temperatures to 43F by mid day along with heavy rain & wind kept these two avid anglers off the water. Last day was a terrific fishing adventure. These two ended up catching 120 Northern Pike and 1 Smallmouth Bass. I think they were fishing for Pike?? Both Glen & Rick said they never experienced a day of fishing that was even comparable, Rick’s parting words as he walked out of the lodge door was “This was the best fishing experience I have ever had”. That says it all.

The Woodhams family, Terry & Larry from Blackhawk & Irvine, CA and Bill from Mattawan, MI were fishing for their first time at Fireside Lodge. 1^st day out was exploring and they caught several Smallmouth & Northern Pike plus 3 Lake Trout in the same areas as the Pike and Smallies. That shows that the water is still cold. Second day they again caught some nice Smallmouth Bass & Pike with Terry having a massive strike that took his entire Daredevle Husky Jr

along with a 9” leader. He said the fish hit like something he never felt before. Needless to say they bought a few more Husky Jr spoons. 3^rd day Larry accomplished a fishing feat by landing his first ever Muskie measuring a husky 36”, and Larry would end up catching 3 Musky by the end of their trip. 4^th day they enjoyed seeing one of our great landmarks, Twin Falls, and caught Smallmouth and Northern Pike & Larry caught two more Muskie on a magic lure I sold him. 5^th day was a card game all day long as a cold front with high winds & heavy rain kept all of the water. 6^th & final day was a great day of fishing & making more memories, and in their parting words all said we would see them again.

Smallmouth Bass day. 3^rd day all had a BIG Smallmouth Day catching 90+ as a group with Josh landing two Trophy 18” Smallmouth along with many 17-17.5”ers landed by all. 4^th day was mostly a rain out as we got a severe cold front with heavy rain and winds all day along with temperatures dropping to 43F by 2:00 PM. The catch of the day was had by Josh as he cleaned up at the all day poker game. 5^th & final day Glenn & Mark made up for it by catching over 45 nice Smallmouth Bass. Justin & Josh also had a 35-40 Smallmouth Day. Amongst all 4 they ended up landing 24 Trophy Smallmouth Bass 18-19.5”. Glenn said it was a GREAT fishing trip.

Weather at Fireside Lodge for our second week was normal with the exception of a 24-hour cold front. The cold front affected the fishers but not the fishing as during that 24 hours the fishing was excellent, especially for two guests your will read about below.

Pike 30”+. 2^nd day was great landing Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike & visually seeing many more having a lot of big Northern Pike follows. 3^rd & final day a severe cold front with heavy rain was their challenge and they met it catching a lot of Smallmouth Bass & a few Pike. All left having a wonderful reunion birthday celebration among good friends hoping to return in the near future.

Fathers & sons Mike & Mike Kucenic with Ron & Chance Grey from Kansas City & Leavenworth, KS joined us for the first time. After supper on DOA they got to it catching some Pike and Smallies. 1^st day had Ron & Chance catching 30 Northern Pike in their boat & as a group the saw a large amount of follows. The Mike’s also did well with younger Mike landing a big 38.5” Pike. 2^nd day was another good day, despite severe cold front conditions with heavy rain, Ron caught a nice Muskie, his 1^st ever, and Mike the younger connected with a Trophy 18” Smallmouth Bass. 3^rd & final day was a terrific as they caught many fish with Ron having a Northern Pike so wild it nearly jumped in the boat. The fish actually slammed into the side of the boat, took another run and got off. Mike & Mike had a Musky day that most dream of as they hooked 7 and landed for over 30” and Mike younger caught his biggest ever measuring 41.5”. A great finish to an even greater fishing trip with many father & son memories made.

Grimes from Frederick & Thurmont, MD were glad to be back. DOA before supper each caught a Trophy Smallmouth Bass Bob’s at 18.5” & Todd’s was 19”. 1^st day they caught 30 Smallmouth Bass, Bob catching an 18.25” Trophy, several Pike, and saw a few Giant Northern. 2^nd day facing severe cold front conditions with rain all day long was terrific fishing as they caught 50 Smallmouth Bass 15-19” with each Bob & Chris catching Trophy 19” Smallmouth & 20 Northern Pike, Chris landing a big 37.5” Pike having a huge girth. 3^rd day was slower catching 17

fish and the 4^th day had them having fabulous action until 11AM then the fish just quit, catching only a few more afterwards. 5^th day was Big fish day as they landed 3 Muskie over 30” and Chris had the prizes of the day landing a big Lake Trout 32” and a GIANT 45” Trophy Muskie. The only thing standing in the way of Chris attaining the Fireside Lodge Master Anglers Trophy Tri-Fecta is catching a 40” or better Northern Pike. 6^th and final day they gave it there best effort and despite catching Pike and Smallies a Trophy Pike was not in the cards. Both left having a great trip already talking about next year’s dates.

days fishing and having good conversation with other guests in the dinning room. Never having done this type of fishing before all was new, and one of Vernon’s goals he stated upon arrival was to have Rebecca catch a Pike. After a day of exploring and learning the waters Vernon accomplished his goal. In fact one day Rebecca out fished Vernon, to his delight. Both really enjoyed their stay and said they wished they had arranged to stay longer because three days just went by too fast. There parting words were, next time we will stay longer, and we hope to see them again soon.

day we discussed some locations specifically for Smallmouth Bass & at super time they told me that all my recommended locations worked, and they caught many Smallmouth Bass all day long. 3^rd and final day was fabulous catching lots of Smallmouth Bass and some Northern Pike ending with a high note. Both left very happy and Tom Bogdan, being in the tourism business for 45 years, left us with a high compliment saying that staying at Fireside Lodge was one of his best experiences ever.

Return Fly Fishing guests Art Girard, Dick Chapman, Larry Baron, & Robert Thomas, from N Chesterfield, Midlothian, & Richmond, VA were glad to be back. These guys are serious fly fishers and it is the only way they fish. 1^st day out Robert picked up where he left off last year catching a nice Muskie. All caught many nice Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike with Dick landing a HUGE Trophy 19”er and lost a BIG Northern Pike at the boat. 2^nd day was

a great Smallmouth Bass day for all, catching 25-30 fish per boat both on surface & wooly buggers, and Robert landed 2-18” trophies. 3^rd day all did well despite the wind & Robert & Dick did exceptional catching near 40 Smallmouth Bass including 7 trophies, 5 at 18”, 1-18.5”, & 1 at 19”. 4^th day was a 20 fish day per boat

having a mix of Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass. 5^th day Robert caught the biggest fish of the trip, a GIANT Trophy 20.5” Smallmouth and another 18’ Trophy. Art had a story to remember. As he set his fly rod down with his hellgemite fly dangling in the water a Muskie decide to attack it, & after fighting the Muskie for a short time it came off and swam away. 6^th & final day Robert & Dick had a Fabulous day catching over 75 Smallmouth Bass with Robert landing 4 Trophy Smallies at 18,18.25.18.5, and 20” and Dick caught two both at 18”. Fabulous finish to another fabulous Fly-Fishing trip at Fireside Lodge.

This week kicked off our 25^th year at Fireside Lodge with great weather and even better fishing. After a long cold snowy winter & very late ice out we had temperatures well above normal for our first week fishing in 2014.

Don & Greg Foley from Crownsville and Pasadena, MD were back for their 4^th consecutive year to chase Northern Pike. They have a passion pursuing these great fighters catching over 30 one day, 60, and over 50 on two other days of Pike fishing. Most were 26 to 33” some were 34-37” and Don caught two Trophy Northern Pike his first measuring 41” and the second at a Huge 43”.

They also had two fabulous days Smallmouth Bass fishing with another Fireside Lodge guest Frank Hazzard, (read the results below), who they met four years ago. Both left having another memorable fishing experience between father & son, and we thank them for choosing Fireside Lodge to spend this special time together.

Frank Hazzard from Arlington, TX returned for his 24^th year in a row. First day Frank and a friend caught 80+ Smallmouth Bass. 2^nd day Frank with Don & Greg Foley caught 128 Smallmouth Bass. Several Northern Pike, Greg landed a 31” Lake Trout & Don caught an 18.5” Smallmouth Bass. WOW what a great day fishing!! Two days later this trio did it all over again catching over 80 Smallmouth 15” to 17.5” inches & 12 Northern Pike. After visiting Fireside Lodge for 24 consecutive years Frank really knows Little Vermilion Lake during the opening time period and on the other days while fishing solo caught from 30 to 65 Smallmouth ever day. He also landed some nice Lake Trout, a few Muskie, some Whitefish and a 40” Tiger Musky. Frank is one of the nicest people you can meet & he will always be found talking with & assisting other guests helping make their trip special. Frank is truly a special man, and those of you who have met him know exactly what I mean.

Tim Stewart & Bryan Neel lll from Rochester, MN returned for their 12^th straight year, most years coming twice. In Bryan’s own words “ we had another great fishing trip”. They caught many Northern Pike and because of the water being ice cold (ice went out just 4 days before they arrived) they also caught many Lake Trout while fishing for Pike.

The largest was a 38.5” MONSTER caught by Tim. Tim also caught a Huge Trophy Muskie measuring 44”. They both caught a lot of Pike 33-38” but Bryan had the catch of the week hooking & landing an absolute Giant Trophy Northern Pike.

It was 45” & had a massive girth. As always we also had a bunch of laughs in the lodge every night at suppertime. Both said they hope to return this summer during the last week in September.

    JohnElmer from Noblesville, IN returned with his son Trent & Dad Pete from Champaign, IL for a three generations family fishing adventure. They had a fabulous time enjoying being together and caught many fish in four days. Their

daily results were 30+ Smallmouth with Trent landing a 30” Lake Trout, 50 Smallmouth, 12 Northern Pike 28-35” and Trent landed a GIANT 35” Lake Trout, 40+ Smallmouth Bass & 12 Northern Pike with Trent landing a Trophy 18” Smallmouth Bass & John caught a HUGE 38.5” Northern Pike. Their 4^th & final day was tremendous Smallmouth fishing catching 60+ along with about 10 nice Northern Pike. All had a great time and went home with the biggest catch of all, the family memories made at Fireside Lodge.

Long time guests Larry & Diane Siebenthal from Creve Coeur, IL were happy to be back. DOA on 1^st night they caught 18 Northern Pike in just a few hours. 1^st full day they caught 35 Northern Pike with Diane toping her personal best landing a 37” Pike. The rest of the week they did great landing numbers of Northern Pike many being 32- 34 inches. They said out of their many trips Pike fishing they caught he most during this week and they also caught some nice Smallmouth Bass while taking a break from the toothy critters. They also took time to take some wonderful scenery pictures, had shore lunch at Twin Falls while taking some great photos of the raging water caused by our high water conditions. The last day was very memorable catching 22 Northern Pike most being large 34-36”ers and Diane topped her personable best for the 2^nd time this week landing a HUGE 40” Master Anglers Award Northern Pike. Both left a little sad but with wonderful memories, despite missing their son & daughter-in-law Scott & Candy.
