Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 7/3 to 7/10 2010

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 7/3 to 7/10 2010
Hello from Fireside Lodge in Northwest Ontario, Canada. The week started out with a big rain system bringing thunderstorms on Saturday, which dumped 2.5 inches of heavy rain on us. This prevented most fishing for that day but on the positive side gave us plenty of water to keep the lake levels up for a while.
David & Kathie Drake from West Terre Haute, IN were back fishing at Fireside Lodge. DOA they wasted no time as they caught many Smallmouth and a few nice 30-inch plus Pike. First full day of fishing they did great landing over 40 Northern Pike. Second day was a rain out as we had thunderstorms all day which dumped 2.5-inches of rain. Third day had these two catching a lot of Smallmouth Bass with Kathie landing the two biggest fish at 17.5 and 18-inch Master Anglers Smallmouth, plus a 33-inch Northern Pike. Fourth day was another great day fishing & catching as they caught 15 each, of Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass. The fifth and final day was a little slower but still caught over a dozen Smallmouth Bass, and Kathie did it again hooking & landing a big 35-inch Muskie. Both had a great time enjoying the atmosphere, wildlife, and conversation with others, and went home with another set of Canadian fishing memories.

Mike Janicki from Union, KY returned to Fireside Lodge this time with his uncle Vince Danko from Wirtz, VA. First day on the water was good for 9 nice Northern Pike 28 to 33-inches and about 15 Smallmouth Bass. Second day was severe t-storms & a total rain out. All week long these two had a ball catching nice size Northern Pike consistently and both caught Muskie, Vince’s being at 29-inches and Mike landed a nice fat 35-inch Muskie. Both came with smiles and left with smiles thoroughly enjoying their stay at Fireside Lodge and making family memories together. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to do so.
Carl Adams and Jody Fraser from Muskegon, MI were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time. First day ever fishing on Little Vermilion Lake System was fabulous as they caught 41 Northern Pike. What a GREAT start. Second day besides catching some Northern Pike & Smallmouth Bass Carl caught a dandy 37” Musky, which was his first. Third day was a few Smallmouth and Pike, but the fourth day they were on fire again landing about 55 Northern Pike, having a lot of action and several double catches. Their 5th and final day had them landing some bigger fish and it seemed to be Jody’s day as she caught a 17-inch Smallmouth and finished with her last cast and last fish landing a big fat 36-inch Pike. Great finish to a great fishing trip. Both told Audrey and I that their stay with us was their best Canadian Fishing experience ever, and they hope to return in the very near future.

Mike and Dee Hummel from Urbandale, IA were back fishing at Fireside Lodge for there 9th time. DOA, despite the heavy rains, 2.5”, they got out and caught some Pike and Smallmouth with Mike landing four nice Smallmouth fly-fishing. First full day was mostly Smallmouth Bass as Mike did best fly fishing with poppers and Dee caught a nice Northern Pike. Second day had them into a bunch of Northern Pike catching close to 30 and Mike caught 6 good size Smallmouth fly-fishing. Third day had them catching a lot of Smallmouth Bass, Dee using jigging techniques and Mike’s were all on the fly rod. Their fourth day was a slower day, however the 5th and final day was very active catching all the Northern Pike they could want with Dee having the hot hand. Besides the fishing both had a wonderful stay enjoying the wilderness and company of some guests they have gotten to know over the years. Before departing they made their 2011 reservations
for the same dates.

Mike Uebelheer and Heather from Stow, OH returned to Fireside Lodge as a couple for their second year in as many, and for Mike it was his second trip this year and fourth in three years. This couple had a ball for their four-day stay with us catching Northern Pike every day and enjoying the wilderness setting we have at Fireside Lodge. They caught Pike up to the mid-30” category and a lot up to 30-inches. While fishing they enjoyed seeing Bald Eagles, Deer, Great Blue Heron, various waterfowl, Loons, and a Moose, which was Heathers goal. By suggestion they took a ride on the road going south after suppertime and sure enough a Moose was at the edge of the bush and gave them a photo opportunity. With fish caught and seeing Heathers Moose their trip was complete and both left having a fabulous stay with us at Fireside Lodge and already discussing their next visit.Old school buddies Mark Warren from Escondido, CA Bill Hedge from Louisville, KY and Eric Teske from Cincinnati, OH were fishing at Fireside Lodge for the first time. Mark was nice enough to send me a letter of their results and experience at Fireside Lodge so below I have copy and pasted his email. They enjoyed their stay and made another set of memories between good friends. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to do so.
Alan and Audrey,
Thanks again to you and your staff for the fine hospitality shown us on our first (and too short) visit to the Fireside Lodge!
As mentioned, Eric Teske (Cincinnati, OH), Bill Hedge (Louisville, KY) and I (Escondido, CA) have been meeting up for fishing adventures across the country since we all graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1981.
While we didn’t keep close track of all the exact number of fish we caught and released over the three days, all in all, it was a great success! I estimate we boated at least (50) Smallmouth and (20) Northern Pike; all out of Little Vermillion Lake and most using #5 Blue Fox spinners or live Leeches. (Next time we will venture into the adjoining waters.)
I personally focused on catching a Musky on our third and final day, Monday, July 5th, but was only able to SEE three fish and hook none. I had one roll over on a Suick and two follows on a Perch X-Rap, so I did get my Musky adrenaline fix. Until next time! Mark Warren
The Frantz Clan of brothers Steve, Jeff, & John from Greer, SC, Southbury, CT and Grass Valley, CA with sons Mike from Milford, CT and Nick from Mathews, NC, were back for their 4th fishing trip to Fireside Lodge. Two words best describe this family group, which are Fun and Laughter. This group did very well catching Big Northern Pike throughout their five days landing a lot of Pike over 30 inches up to 37-inches. They also did well catching Smallmouth Bass with Jeff excelling in this category landing two Master Anglers Award Smallies both measuring 18-inches. In the Musky area Steve & Jeff caught a 30”, John a 31”, Steve a 30 and 37-incher, and Nick came up with the BIG Daddy of all hooking and Landing a Monster 46-inch Tiger Muskie. Yes, Tiger Muskie!! This fish had a huge girth and is in the top of its size class for a Tiger. WOW, what a great catch for Nick. Besides all the great fishing and catching this group had I always admire their ability to constantly have fun and laugh together, and when all is said a done the biggest catch this group had this week was the family memories which will be with them for the rest of their living years.

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 6/26 to 7/3 2010

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 6/26 to 7/3 2010
Hello from Fireside Lodge in Northwest Ontario, Canada. This week’s weather brought us some much-needed rain but too much too fast as it rained 1.5 inches within 8 hours. The rest of the week was up and down have temperatures anywhere from the 80’s to 59 for highs.

Long time guests of Fireside Lodge Tom Crooks from Feasterville, Pa and Chuck Barreras from Douglassville, PA were back with daughters Maria, Andrianna, & son Stephen. On day of arrival they wasted no time going out and catching some Northern Pike & Smallmouth with Andrianna catching her first ever Pike. Second day was terrific as Chuck landed 35 Northern Pike himself, and the group accounted for well over 100. Second day was a half-day for Muskie fishing on Closs lake and half day Smallmouth Bass fishing. Closs produced in the ways of huge Musky follows, however hooking one proved to be a challenge. They did catch Smallmouth, a few Pike, and had a fun day on the lake. Third day brought heavy rain and colder air, which kept the kids from fishing but gave Tom and Chuck the rare opportunity to fish together. They decided to try for big toothy critters and after some map discussion were off to carry out there plan. Well, they had success fishing deeper rock structure areas near weed beds and caught some bigger Pike. Fourth and final day was going to be a numbers day for a big finish but the youngsters decided they would rather fish for big fish. Success was achieved as they went out and caught about 12 bigger Pike, and Chuck and one on that took him all over the place with a strong run and the head shaking all the way. Also, Stephen caught some nice Smallmouth Bass. All left with another set of GREAT family fishing memories.
Guests since 1995 Paul & Martha Weaver from Princeton, IN returned with their two grandsons James Paul Cole, & Matthew Whitter. After catching some nice Smallmouth and a few nice Northern Pike on their day of arrival, their first day was full of Northern Pike action catching about 30 and Paul came up with a BIG 40.5-inch Master Anglers Award Pike. Second day was spent catching some nice Smallmouth and a few Pike. Third day brought very heavy rain and cold front conditions, which limited time on the water to just a few hours catching a few fish. Fourth day had them having a blast landing 41 Northern Pike on a very cool 59-degree day. Fifth and final day was a great finish as they all had a ball catching over 40 Smallmouth Bass. All went home having another set of memories at Fireside Lodge & we thank Paul and Martha for choosing Fireside Lodge for this special time spent with their grandchildren.
The Parkinson Family of father Mark, and sons Joshua, Travis, & Ryan from West Bend / New Berlin, WI, Denver, CO and Baltimore, MD were all back at Fireside Lodge to fish as a result of a great Christmas gift from Mark. First day was a severe rainstorm and cold front conditions, but four just six hours all managed to catch plenty of Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass and each caught some bigger fish. First two days were good as all caught Northern Pike and some Smallmouth Bass. The third day was very good catching 20 Smallmouth & over 20 Northern Pike with Joshua catching the biggest of the day landing a fat 36-inch Pike. Fourth day had them catching some Smallmouth and 12 Pike. Fifth day was fabulous as they had all day non-stop action on Northern Pike, catching them all day long. Too many to count was the consensus. This group I admired as they had fun whatever they were doing enjoying conversation among themselves and with others and you could always find them by the sound of laughter. It was very obvious the relationship between Mark and his sons is a very special one, and they all made some very special memories to carry throughout their future.Frank and Linda Tyrrell from GA. were back to Fireside Lodge for their 7th consecutive year and on their first day of fishing the fought off the heavy rain, 1.5”, and cold front to catch a lot of nice size Pike, and Frank just missed a BIG Musky as it got off right near the boat. These two had a GREAT week catching Northern Pike with many of them in the 26 to 33-inch range and they said every day was a good day with a few being great catching days. They ended up landing over 125 Northern Pike during their week stay and on the final day the topped it off with each catching big 34-inch Pike, and Frank landed a HUGE 41-inch Tiger Muskie. What a fabulous finish to a terrific fishing trip.
Kent Williams and Bill Black from Atlanta, GA returned to Fireside Lodge for their seventh time and the first day was a tough one as heavy rains and cold front conditions cut down their fishing time but still managed a few fish. Second day they made up for the first as they caught a lot of Smallmouth Bass and from the discussion at the dinning room table Kent did better than Bill as he was using a wacky worm rig and Bill refused to use this method even though Kent offered Bill some of his plastic worms. Third day they tried to duplicate the 2nd day but not a chance as the Smallmouth Bass just would not cooperate. Bill was amazed at the difference in one day to the next while using the same technique in the same areas. That’s fishing and that’s what keeps all us fishers loving the sport. Last day was a strong finish as Kent and Bill caught plenty of Smallmouth Bass and both left as they came with full smiles, and still razzing each other.
Dick Kile with son Rick & Charlie, & son-in law Brad Evans and grandson Brandon all from Schnecksville, PA and Chicago, IL were here to fish and make family memories together. First day was fabulous despite the cold front and heavy rains as they ended up catching 45 Smallmouth Bass, several Pike, and highlights of the day were Brandon catching his first Northern Pike and landing a 17.5-inch Smallmouth, and Charlie caught two 18-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. WOW!! What a great day. Second day was FANTASTIC as the group caught 76 Northern Pike and Brandon came up with the special catch of the day landing a 35” Clear Musky, which was his first Musky ever. Third and final day was back to Smallmouth fishing, catching over 30 along with a couple of Pike. For this family group the fishing was great, fun continuous, and the memories made were unforgettable and priceless.
Father and son Chuck and Charles (Skip) Kauffman from Mechanicsburg & East Liberty, OH returned to Fireside Lodge for their second time. Three days is what they had and they wasted no time catching 29 Northern Pike on their first. Second day had these two catching 18 Pike and some Smallmouth, with Chuck catching a Master Anglers Award Trophy Smallmouth Bass measuring 18-inches. Congratulations to Chuck. Third and final day (boy 3 days go by fast), they caught many Northern Pike and Skip had a fishing milestone as he landed his very first Musky. Great going Skip!! They both left saying they had a terrific stay with us at Fireside Lodge and took home some fond father and son memories.

Murray Meierhoff and Don Hilgers from St Louis and Rolla, MO were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time. First day was very short for fishing time as a rainstorm and cold front created tough fishing conditions. Next day was a good day as they caught Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike and Murray broke the ice landing the first Muskie. Bigger Muskie, Northern Pike, & Smallmouth are why Murray and Don choose Fireside Lodge. They did well throughout their stay catching many Pike in the over 30” to 35” category and Murray ended up landing three Muskie with his largest being a fat 38-inches. They also had some good Smallmouth Fishing with Don landing an 18-inch Master Anglers Award Bass. Both had loads of fun and expressed they had a great stay with us at Fireside Lodge

The Meyer family consisting of three fathers and each if their two sons Marty, Jake, & Jordan / John, Nick, & Mick, / Bob, Jake, & Mitch returned to Fireside Lodge for their third time in four years. This family was here for a quick three days of fishing and they filled every minute out on the water. They caught a lot of fish and had loads of fun taking a break every day to have a long shore lunch and enjoy the Twin Falls area on Little Vermillion Lake. This gave the boys the opportunity to investigate what the forest has to offer, swim by the falls, and cook over an open fire giving them a total outdoor experience. They also celebrated Mitch’s birthday which was a big event. All had a lot of fun and made some special memories between fathers, sons, uncles, and nephews, which were simply priceless. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge for the third time to make some special family memories.
Father & Son David and Marc McFarland from Pendelton & Muncie, IN returned to Fireside Lodge for their eighth consecutive year. First day was cut short by heavy rain and a cold front, but not before David and Marc caught some nice Smallmouth & Northern Pike. When they came in to dry out Marc said that of the 1.5-inches of rain that fell 1-inch ended up in his boot. Instead of fighting it they took a long nap and stayed warm & dry. Second day these two caught 17 Smallmouth Bass & a 30” Pike. Third day was terrific as they combined for 42 total fish, 33 being Pike & 9 Smallmouth, with Mark catching two big 17.5” Smallies. Fourth day was 17 Smallmouth, fifth they caught 14 Smallies and 5 Pike, and their last day was finished with a bang catching a few Smallmouth and 40 Northern Pike. Both went home Happy & Sad, as another memorable fishing week came to an end, but they can already look forward to their return in 2011 as they made their reservations with us before leaving.

Ryan & Lisa Matthews from Winnipeg, Manitoba were at Fireside Lodge for their first time to enjoy their 10th anniversary. Enjoy is an understatement as Ryan and Lisa had a FABULOUS time staying with us at Fireside Lodge not only catching fish but taking in the whole package of wilderness, scenery, wildlife viewing and everything else a natural setting in the boreal forest wilderness provides. After having a bunch of nice size Pike following their lures they came to my tackle shop for advise on how to turn these follows into catches. After a good discussion on how fish attack other fish and presentation of different lures they purchased some Blue Fox Spinners and X-Raps, then they were on their way to apply their skills. Well, when they returned with big smiles on their faces I knew the results would be positive and they were as they caught a bunch of Pike having loads of fun doing so. Another success was their discovery of how to fish with leeches and how much Smallmouth love them. After some instruction and again the application of their skills, Ryan and Lisa had a ball catching these ever fighting bronze backs. These two were having so much fun that they decided to skip the traditional Canada Day, (July 1st) fireworks in Sioux Lookout to enjoy the wonderful natural sounds and scenery from their cabin deck as the fire flies gave them a very quiet and peaceful light show for this special Canadian Holiday. We thank Ryan & Lisa for choosing Fireside Lodge to enjoy their special milestone of marriage.

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 6/19 to 6/26 2010

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 6/19 to 6/26 2010

Hello from Fireside Lodge in Northwest Ontario, Canada. This week has two words to paint the whole picture. “Wonderful” Weather and “Terrific” Fishing & Catching.
High School friends and best buddies Dan Szkola and Don Landbo from Sugar Grove and S. Elgin, IL retuned to Fireside Lodge for their 7th consecutive year. After Don left he sent me an email of his and Dan’s results. So as the saying goes this is straight from the horses mouth from Don’s letter: “Forgot to give you the results during checkout-I had not been that tired since my Basic Training days. We really went at it hard again for two old guys. Thur-14 SM and 3 NP to 34" between us, Fri-Blown off lake, but managed 6 SM and 4 NP between us, Sat- record shattering day-Dan 12 SM (1 @ 18") 65 NP Don 9SM and 85 NP and some great video, Sun-Dan 3 SM (1 @ 19.5") 44NP Don 3SM (1 @ 18.75" & 1 @ 18") 36NP, Mon-Dan 17SM (1 @ 18") Don 29SM (1 @ 18.5") 4NP, Tue- Dan 9 SM and 47NP -Don 5SM and 48NP
Wed- Dan 3SM and 32NP -Don 2SM and 44NP more good video,
524 boated fish, plus all the top water misses and fish that never made it all the way to the boat, which was likely 8 or 9 for every one boated. As usual everything was to the highest standards. We both have great new memories and new fishing and wildlife stories. I think we forgot to mention the bobcat/lynx we saw run across the hill and over to the utility shed Tuesday as we were leaving the dock one morning. And possibly the best story of 2010 was you having a smaller version of Dans' beat up (from catching lots of fish for years) unknown lure at checkout. If I miss you at the St Charles show, see you in 50 1/2 weeks, Don Landbo
Phil Spahr from Fairborn, Oh. his sons Brad and Tim from Marboro, MA and their Uncle Jerry from WV were all back to Fireside for their 10th consecutive year. DOA and the first day they caught 20 Pike up to 34” & 18 Smallmouth Bass up to 17”. Second day was a BIG day as the group caught 148 Northern Pike & Tim landed a nice Tiger Muskie. Third day they caught 15 Smallmouth, 6 Pike, and Tim caught his second Musky, however Phil was up to his old Beatle Spin tricks as after hooking a Smallmouth a Musky decided to take it away from Phil. After the obvious struggle the Musky won and got lunch. Fourth day was a BIG catching day as they caught 77 Pike and 2 Smallmouth. Fifth and sixth days Phil & Jerry kept their numbers up as they landed 95 Pike and 5 Smallmouth and a Musky, but Tim and Brad changed tactics and decided to chase BIG toothy critters. After some discussion on lure type and a new technique they were off to test their skills. Well, the results happened on Brad’s third cast catching a BIG FAT 35-inch Tiger Muskie and they proceeded to catching Pike in the 30 to 33-inch range. Last day the did even better landing more big fish including each catching a 38” Northern Pike, Tim caught two Musky at 30 & 34-inches and Brad caught a chunker 35” Pike. This set the stage for many winter discussions in planning for their next fishing trip. This entire group caught 358 Pike, 48 Smallmouth, and 6 Muskie. Great Trip making Fantastic Family Memories!!

Tyler Tennant from TX and father-in-law Peter Higman from IL returned to Fireside Lodge for their fifth consecutive year. Always after the big fish, this year was no different. They had plenty of follows but the big boys were not cooperating as they did in previous years. Tyler and Peter caught a lot of toothy critters, mostly Pike and also caught a lot of BIG Smallies on large lures. Tyler landed the biggest of the week, a MONSTER measuring 19-inches. Both had a great time fishing together as always.
Father Paul Capecchi with son Tony returned to Fireside Lodge for their 8th consecutive year. The fishing results below were taken from notes that Tony & Paul gave to me when departing. DOA these two saw a Moose & Caught 15 Pike up to 32-inches, and what more can you ask for? First day was fabulous catching over 150 fish, Tony landing two Muskie at 31” and a Big Fat 43” Trophy Clear Musky, and a GIANT 19” Smallmouth Bass. Next day was another 150 fish day, mostly Pike, the biggest being a FAT 35-incher. Third day they were in search for Muskie only and had many follows but no takers, caught 1 large Pike, a dozen Smallmouth and one 1400LB Moose sighting. GREAT DAY!!! Fourth day had them at near 100 fish the highlight being an 18” Master Anglers Smallmouth Bass. Fifth day was over 150 fish and Tony caught a HUGE 39” Musky. Last day was over 100 fish day and Paul landed a beauty 18.5” Trophy Smallmouth and they ended their trip with a traditional double catch of Northern Pike. They had 8 doubles in all and Tony caught 7 Pike on 7 consecutive casts. Most of all they caught & kept to take with them another set of wonderful father and son memories fishing together in the great wilderness we have to offer at Fireside Lodge.
Joe & Mike Martineck from Addison & Bolingbrook, IL were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time. For first timers they learn fast as they caught over 100 Northern Pike on their first day. WOW!! Second and third days were not as fast action but they did caught some quality Pike and after leaving their big net back on the dock Mike hooked into a GIANT Master Anglers Award size Muskie and had it to the boat several times and in an attempt to land this monster by putting it’s head in a Bass net and picking it up by the tail, the fish shook violently, flopped out of the net only leaving the hook behind and all Mike & Joe could do is watch this submarine slowly swim away. As for the big net, be assured they will never leave the dock without it again. Fourth day was full of action again as they landed over 40 Northern Pike. Their fifth day was a slower day, but on the sixth and final day they finished strong catching well over 50 Northern Pike, 3 Smallmouth & Joe caught a GIANT 19.5” Master Anglers Trophy Smallie. Great Fishing and GREAT Memories for this father and son.
Leon Robbins from Yadkinville, NC returned for his 5th year and Justine Sebastine from Mount Holly, NC was back for his 2nd year. On their DOA while fishing for just two hours before supper they had an amazing start to their 5 days of fishing. Justine hooked into and landed a BIG 41” Musky. That’s setting the bar Justine. Next day they had a great day catching 63 Northern Pike, 11 Smallmouth Bass with two being Trophy Master Anglers measuring 18.5 & 19.25-inches. Two of there remaining four days were spent chasing Musky having lots of follows and Justine caught two more near 30-inches plus they caught 8 Pike & 20 Smallmouth. The other two days were full of catching 125 Pike 10 Smallmouth Bass with Justin also catching a Master Anglers Award Smallmouth at 18-inches and one more Musky. Both had a blast and were already discussing their plans for 2011.
Ross Lagerblade from Crestwood, KY with Father Roy from Rock Island, IL returned for their 6th trip. The day of arrival these two caught some nice Northern Pike to get started off right. There first full day of fishing they accomplished their personal best day by landing 78 Northern Pike with a bunch of other action. Second day was spent chasing Musky having some follows but no hook ups. Third day was another action packed Pike day; Ross saying his dad and him caught Northern Pike all day long. On the fourth and final day they again fished for Musky but could not get any to cooperate and caught a few larger Pike. Both left as they came, full of chatter and laughter logging another set of fishing memories made together.
Jim Pim returned to Fireside Lodge with brother Rich, Robert Dosey, Steven Barton, Edward Prichard, & Howard Reding from Shell Knob, Carthage, Sarcoxie, Diamond, & Joplin, MO. These fellows had fabulous fishing and fun. First day of fishing was fabulous as they caught lots of Northern Pike with Howard and Steven saying that they could have caught as many Pike as they wanted. Second day Jim and Robert caught 40+ Smallmouth, Robert landed a Master Anglers 18.5-incher, & a Musky each, Howard and Steven said they were wore out by suppertime catching Smallmouth and Rich and Ed caught just as many. Third day was another fabulous Pike day as each boat averaged 75 Northern Pike, and Rick had the catch of the day landing a BIG FAT 42.5” Tiger Musky. Fourth day was another great Smallmouth day with each boat catching 35-45 per boat. Fifth and last day they all had another great Pike day catching many pike in the 26 to 32-inch range. All left having a fabulous time and after they left we missed the laughter and fun coming from their dinning room table.

The Scott family group was back including Ewell, Ed, Greg, Brian, Guest of honor Earl and Tom Carew, Charlie Tingle, and Troy Burchett. They came from KY, OK, IL, and NC to celebrate a very special 97th Birthday for Earl. When Ewell asked his dad Earl what he wanted for his 97th birthday he replied, “I’d like to go back to Fireside Lodge”, where Earl has celebrated his birthdays of 89,90,91,92,93,and 94. First day out they averaged 35-40 Smallmouth per boat and that’s 140-160 for the group. Great Day. Second day Greg & Earl caught over 35 Smallmouth with Earl landing an 18” Master Anglers. Master Angler at 97 is a remarkable fishing feat. Ed & Brian caught 25 Smallmouth and 37 Pike, and Charlie, Ewell, Tom, & Troy all caught a bunch of Pike, 60-70. Third day was Ewells 70th B-Day and congrats to Ewell. He was fishing with Tom and the caught a lot of nice Pike and Tom had a 40-inch plus Pike near the boat. Charlie and Troy caught over 40 Smallmouth, and Earl while fishing with grandson Brian caught 40 Smallies himself along with another 18” Trophy Master Anglers Award Bass. Fourth and final day was another great day in several ways. First the whole group caught a lot of Smallmouth Bass with Ed, Troy, and Brian all coming away with Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass 18 to 18.5-inches. Also, we had a terrific celebration in the dining room for Earls 97th birthday. The cake was a very BIG traditional birthday cake with a fishing theme and it said “Happy Birthday Earl – Master Angler at 97”. Everyone, 48 people in all, sang to Earl and it was a very joyous and memorable event. Audrey and I were very fortunate to have Earl want to spend his birthday with us at Fireside Lodge. To see this event go to our Facebook or YouTube links. Enjoy. Earl is truly an inspiration to us all.
John Budin returned to Fireside Lodge with friends Jerry Sullivan, Bob Gabrielsen, and Bill Foreman from Arlington Heights, Highwood, & Johnsburg, IL. Very first day these guys caught many Northern Pike, so many they lost count. Second day was slower, but the third day was another GREAT day fishing & catching Pike & Smallmouth with Bob catching an 18.5” Master Anglers Award Smallie. Their fourth and final day was another very active day catching a lot of Northern Pike and some nice Smallmouth. All left having a blast and with big smiles after having some down time in the wonderful wilderness we have to offer.

First timers to Fireside Lodge were Rich Canada, Ron Arnold, & Bob Ayotte from Johnstown, OH, Commerce, MI and Waterford, MI. These guys were here for the BIG toothy critters we are known for and on their first day they caught some Northern Pike, but they were very surprised at the number of BIG Pike and Muskie follows they had. So we discussed techniques and tactics to turn some of these follows into catches and they were off to apply their skills. Well, things worked out very good as they caught a lot of Pike and Ron ended up taking a picture with one of those big follows as he caught a Trophy Master Anglers Award 40-inch Northern Pike. Their third and final day brought them more BIG Pike caught and had some of those big Pike & Musky follows. All had a great time fishing together at Fireside Lodge.

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 6/12 to 6/19 2010

Fireside Lodge Fishing Report 6/12 to 6/19 2010

Hello from Fireside Lodge in Northwest Ontario, Canada. Our fifth week and the weather continued to be pleasant except for a few rain showers and thunderstorms, which moved through quickly.
George and Nicky Stewart from Windsor, Ontario were experiencing Fireside Lodge for their first time. First day they caught fish and George landed a 31 and 28-inch Northern Pike with Nicky catching a nice Smallmouth and lost a huge one. Second day they did very well catching a good number of Smallmouth Bass & Northern Pike and all good size. They also enjoyed a beautiful day we had, calm and 70 degrees. Second and third days were just better and better catching more and bigger fish. The excitement in this couple just vibrated through our lodge as they described all the wonderful experiences they were enjoying that come with fishing in our wonderful wilderness area. Fourth day they managed to catch a few, even though Mayflies were in full swing, and it was even hard to tempt the Bass with night crawlers, actually seeing the fish swim away after looking the worm over. Fourth day was fabulous and they had the fish happening of their lives as George hooked a GIANT Muskie that took him under and around the boat with several strong runs then broke or bit right through the swivel on his steel leader. Fifth day was very active as they caught 15 nice hard hitting Pike trolling despite having their day cut short due to T-Storms. On their last day the high winds hindered their fishing a forced them in by noon so they choose to spend it enjoying the natural surrounding at Fireside Lodge to end a terrific vacation.

Charlie Walton from Hudson, OH was returning to Fireside Lodge for his third consecutive year, this being a very special trip bringing his son Ben and two grandsons Benton 12, and Nathan 8 years old. First day fishing brought some good Smallmouth and Pike action with Benton & Nathan lading BIG Smallies on a fly rod, Nathan’s measured a fat 15” and Benton landed an 18-inch Trophy Master Angles qualifier. The mayflies were in hatch and Charlie was wise to match the hatch wit a Hexaginia Nymph. Second day was very productive for Smallmouth Bass and this day was Nathan’s day to go down in the record book as this young fellow at 8 years of age landed a Trophy Master Anglers Award 18.375-inch Smallmouth. WOW!! Great Catch Nathan. Third day was a fabulous day of other activities for Charlie and grandson Nathan, but Ben and Benton did very well fishing catching Northern Pike and Smallmouth, with Benton catching some great 15-16-inchers and Ben caught a huge 18-inch Master Anglers Smallie. Great day fishing for father and son. Fourth & final day was very windy which made fly fishing nearly impossible for Charlie but Ben and the boys caught fish and had fun right up to suppertime. Great memories were made between three generations and thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to spend your special family time.Long time return guests Ron and Mar Beth Huffman from West Dundee, IL arrived with smiles and happy to be here. On the day of their arrival they started with a bang catching 13 Northern Pike and about 30 Smallmouth Bass with Ron catching 3 Master Anglers Smallmouth over 18-inches. After spending their morning breaking over beaver dams to fish Cedarbough Lake with not much fishing success they returned to Little Vermilion and caught over 50 big Smallmouth. Ron caught two more over 18” and a 19-incher, & Mary Beth caught her first over 18-inches. Second day was portage lake day where they caught over 40 Pike a one BIG walleye about 26-27-inches. Third was a day of rest, but after supper fishing for just 2.5 hours these two had fabulous Smallmouth Bass fishing as they caught over 40, with most being larger, and Ron caught another three trophy Smallmouth over 18-inches. Fourth day had these to back on another portage for terrific Pike fishing catching between 80-90. The last day was amazing as they caught 224 Northern Pike having lots of doubles along with 3 Smallmouth Bass Ron landing two trophy bass at 19 & 20-inches. Fabulous finish to a fabulous trip.

Returning to Fireside Lodge for their 7th year were Bill Aulenbach from Barberton, OH father Bill Rasbach with son Kyle from Ft Myer, Fl & Boston, MA and newcomer Joe DeMeis from Wellesley, MA. First day Bill A went to his favorite bay, Portage Bay, where he and Joe got into some nice pike and Bill & Kyle did great catching 31 Smallmouth. Second day had Bill A & Kyle catching some quality Smallmouth 15 to 17” and Bill R and Joe had a fabulous day landing over 50 Smallmouth on a very small all white in-line spinner. Third day had Joe and Kyle catching over 49 Smallmouth and Joe caught his first Master Anglers Smallie measuring 18.5”. The two Bill’s mixed it up catching 25 Smallmouth and 20 Northern Pike. Great day for all. Fifth day was Musky day for Bill A & Joe, catching one and 5 very nice Northern Pike. Bill R and son Kyle caught 5 Muskie with the biggest one jumping out of the net breaking away one of the hooks from their lure. Kyle also caught his first Master Anglers Award Smallmouth at 18.25-inches after catching two just missing at 17 and 17.5” on consecutive casts. Great day for all. Sixth day was terrific with the group catching a total of 156 Northern Pike & Bill R with son Kyle accounted for 103. Their 7th and last day was relaxing soaking up the moments day as they targeted large Smallmouth Bass. While catching plenty of Pike they caught some great size Smallies with Bill A landing one 17.5-incher and Kyle finished strong catching two monsters both at 19” & bursting at the seams. All left having a great time and made their reservations for the same dates in 2011.
Walt LaCasse LaCasse from Minnetonka, MN, John Hietala from Northfield, MN, Jim Jones from McKinney, TX, Bruce Laybourne from Milford, OH and Mike Ahrens from Plymouth, MN returned for their traditional annual group trip to Fireside Lodge. First evening brought good Northern Pike action & Bruce caught a 35-incher. First day was a good day as Jim caught his first ever 18-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth and Walt came up with the long fish of the day landing a nice 37-inch Pike. Second day was good as they all caught fish, but John and Terry did the best catching numerous Smallmouth and both Terry & John landed Master Anglers Bass at 18-18.25”. Third day was windy & after discussing strategy they set out to catch some bigger Pike. Well, it worked as they caught 20+ big pike between 31 to 36-inches. Fourth & final day they went out with a BANG catching well over 100 Pike just between Jim, Walt, & Terry and Walt caught the biggest Smallmouth for the trip landing a monster 19.5-incher. GREAT day, GREAT trip, and before departing they reserved the same dates for 2011.
Al & Pat Wortz from Bluffton, SC were returning as a couple for their second consecutive year and for Al it was one of many trips. Great first day with Smallmouth Bass catching them on tubes with a slower presentation, competing with the May Fly hatch, and Pat had a nice Musky follow on a tube jig. Second day was GREAT for both catching a lot of Smallmouth, and even better for Pat as she caught the BIG BASS, and with Pat’s finesse and expertise she managed to land a 32-34-inch Northern Pike with a light spinning rod on 8lb test and no leader. GRRREAT catch Pat, and nice assist AL. Third day had these two catching 7 Smallmouth & 7 Pike with Pat again catching the larger fish. Their last but not least fifth day brought them all the pike they could catch between 9:00AM and 1:00PM as they had a fabulous time catching a total of 46. Al & Pat most importantly had a fabulous stay with us just enjoying the atmosphere and having some great conversation with other Fireside guests. They left saying, “We hope to be back next August”.

Return guest since 1998 Dan Mosier with son Nathan from Lincoln, NE were back to enjoy wilderness fishing at Fireside Lodge. Few hours before supper on arrival day they caught 7 Smallmouth and 7 Pike including a big 35-incher. First full day both had a lot of action catching 20 Smallmouth Bass and 30 Northern Pike. Second day had them having a GREAT day catching many Northern Pike between 33 to 35-inches and Dan came up with a Huge Master Anglers Award Pike measuring a stout 42”. Nathan was a big contributing factor in Dan landing this fish as he was manning the cradle and did an excellent job in netting this trophy fish for his dad. Their third day was miraculous breaking all of their own personal records catching 213 Northern Pike and the fourth day was almost a repeat as they landed another 179 Northern Pike. Being exhausted from the previous two days, their final day fishing approach was more casual, still catching some Smallmouth Bass and Pike, but also soaking up the wilderness they so enjoy and would soon be leaving behind. We will see Dan again, and his daughter Abbi in late August.
Ken Benkeser from Clover, SC brother Don and his son Danny from Wayne, IL, Chris Cusik, Mike Kamp from Bolingbrook & Chicago, IL and Tony Weber from Lafayette, IN returned to Fireside Lodge after a furlough. First day was very windy and hard to manage fishing spots but all caught some fish and enjoyed. Second day they made up for lost time as the group caught over 100 Northern Pike and Mike landed an 18.5” Master Anglers Smallmouth. Third day was a carbon copy as the group caught well over 90 Pike and their fourth and final day was about half their best day. All had a blast enjoying time with old friends and Don with son Danny made some great father & son memories. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge.

Jerry Amer and Bill Calhoon from Columbus, OH showed up with bells on for their 5th consecutive trip to Fireside Lodge. Day of arrival after a few adjustments, they caught close to 50 Smallmouth & Pike. First full day had these guys catching 40 fish split evenly between Smallmouth & Northern Pike. Second day they exploded catching over 150 fish, a lot being Pike, and about 30 Smallmouth 5 being trophy size between 18-19-inches and four of these monsters were caught on a fly rod. In fact almost all of Bill’s fish and half of Jerry’s were caught fly-fishing. Third day was Muskie day landing three and they caught well over 50 Smallmouth Bass. Fourth and final day was a great finish as they caught 61 Northern Pike and two more Master Anglers Award Smallmouth one being a Huge 19-incher. Before departing us Jerry told me he has been fishing in Canada every year since he was 16 and none of his other fishing trips have ever been able to compare to his trips to Fireside Lodge. Both left as they came, with smiles & laughter, saying that they would be seeing us in 2011.
