Fireside Lodge Fishing News/Photo Report 9/5 to 9/12 2009

Fireside Lodge Fishing News/Photo Report 9/5 to 9/12 2009

The unusual warm weather continued into this week having temperatures anywhere from 12 to 18 degrees above normal, sunny with very calm winds. A few brief showers popped up towards the end of the week but nothing major.
Tim Stewart and Bryan Neel lll from Rochester, MN returned to Fireside Lodge for their second fishing trip in 2009. First afternoon on day of arrival before supper they caught 8 nice Northern Pike between 25 to 29-inches. During supper we all celebrated Tim’s 44-th Birthday with candles and the traditional b-day song. Now Tim said all he needs on their evening fish is a 44-inch tooth critter. Well, Tim did make contact with two 44-inch or larger Muskie however he could not get either to take his bait and a third, that seemed to be a large Musky trashed at his top-water lure just a few feet from the boat, made a big splash and vanished as quickly as it came. All in all it was a great 44th birthday for Tim. First day was fabulous as they caught many Northern Pike between 25 to 34-inches, Tim catching a 35, 38, and 39.75-inch Northern pike and Bryan landed a HUGE Master Anglers Award 40-inch Northern Pike. In one word “FABULOUS”. Second day was a very active Pike day as they landed many Northern Pike in the 25 to 33-inch range. Third day was very good as they caught a lot of Northern Pike in the 26 to 33-inch range with a few 34 and a few 35-inchers. Fourth day had these two searching for a while, and found fishing in at least 15 feet or better to be the ticket to catching fish on this particular day. When fishing at this depth they started to catch Pike of all sizes including a 36-inch and Tim landed a MONSTER 42-inch Master Angers Award Northern Pike with huge girth. Fifth day they caught plenty of Northern Pike in the 25 to 30-inch range, however the larger fish evaded their every tactic. Sixth day was a different story as they found Pike early and some Big ones, with Bryan catching a 36-incher and Tim caught his second Master Anglers Award Northern Pike in three days landing a beauty 41-inch very fat Pike. They also got into some active Smallmouth Bass fishing at the edge of wind blown reeds using rattle traps. A lot of the Smallies were 15 to 17-inchesSeventh day was unseasonably warm with temperatures reaching 81 degrees, which took the zest out of the fishers giving the advantage to the fish. Bryan and Tim had a slower day but still caught some small to medium size Pike, and managed to fit in a swim to cool off. Eighth day had them catching a lot of Northern Pike most between 26 to 35-inches, and Bryan came up with a BIG 38-incher. Ninth and final day they finished with a bang but on a different note. Concentrating on toothy critters for 8 days they decided to fishing for Smallmouth Bass catching a lot on Rattle Traps. The caught a lot of 15 to 17.5-inch Smallies and landed three Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. Tim catching one at 19-inches and Bryan two at 18 and 19-inches. It was a fabulous end to a fabulous fishing week at Fireside lodge, and as departing they said to make sure we have room for them during our opening week in May of 2010.
First timers at Fireside lodge were John and Carrie Wasko from Jersey City, NJ. First day they did great finding Northern Pike quickly catching many in the 25 to 33-inch range and Carries caught the lone Smallmouth measuring 16-inches. Second day was hot for September being 18 degrees above normal highs, and they had a slower day catching some Northern Pike and Carrie had some excitement when a BIG Muskie followed her lure, showed itself to Carrie and John, then waved goodbye with it’s tail. Third day John, Carrie, and I talked about some new fishing spots for them and Carrie wanted to know where the Musky were hiding. After some planning they were off and on their way to enjoy their day fishing. Well the morning discussion must have had an impact as they had a great day catching Northern Pike, Carrie caught her first ever Musky, and John lost a BIG Musky after it took him under the boat. You should have seen the smile on their faces and heard the excitement in their voices while docking their boat. Day four had these two having another very active day catching a lot of Northern Pike and when I asked how many they caught they lost track but Carrie said the best producing lure was a Johnson Silver Minnow Spoon. Fifth day was GREAT day for Carrie and John as they caught 41 Northern Pike, John saying that it was a record day for them. Sixth and final day was a slower day catching fish but they had loads of fun enjoying the wonderful wilderness that surrounded them while fishing, and soaked up their final hours. Both said they hope to return to Fireside Lodge in 2010.

Returning for their seventh consecutive year were Charlie Geinosky from Burbank, IL and father and son Bob and Jon Reinhardt from Orland Park and Aurora, IL. On their day of arrival they started out quickly having fast action catching Northern Pike. First day was good, but more searching was needed, and Bob came up with the BIG fish of the day measuring 35.5-inches, which created a little debate at suppertime about the measurer. Second day was a very good day, with some slow periods between action. They caught some good size Northern Pike in the mid-30-inch range and both Charlie and Jon landed Muskie between 34 and 36-inches. Third day was good Pike action until about noon when things shut down until about 3:00 PM. Then they started catching fish again and Charlie came up with the fish of the day landing a GIANT 40.5-inch Master Anglers Award Northern Pike. This is a must see photo. On their fourth day Charlie picked up where he left off the day before by catching a 36-inch Northern Pike and it was Bob’s day for a BIG fish as he caught a 39-inch Northern Pike with a HUGE girth. Color of the day was pink, and lure of choice was a buck-tail. Fifth day was another great day catching BIG fishing for these three. Jon caught a 35.5-inch Muskie, Charlie caught another 40.5-inch Master Anglers Award Northern Pike and Bob landed another HUGE 41-inch Master Anglers Award Northern Pike and a 40-inch Musky. The Musky was a story in itself as Charlie had the follow and the fish went under the boat. Well all three of them found themselves hanging over the side of the boat doing the figure eight. The fish came after all of their lures while doing the figure eight, each time returning under the boat, and after 5 minutes of this circus going on the fish hit Bob’s Blue Fox Spinner. I guess the figure eight works! Sixth and final day they caught a few fish and even though it was not filled with the action and BIG fish the previous five days were, they enjoyed their last day in the great Canadian Wilderness until 2010.

Back at Fireside Lodge for their second trip in 2009 and for their tenth consecutive year were Aaron and Michele Hayes from N Aurora, IL. On the day of arrival before supper the had fast action on Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike and Aaron actually landed two nice Smallmouth Bass on the same cast both hooked on the same lure. WOW, That’s action for ya! First day was a good day as they caught 19 total fish being a mix of Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike, Michele catching a nice 17.5-inch Smallmouth and Aaron landing a beauty 36-inch Musky. Second day they caught about 15-fish mostly Northern Pike. Third day was a portage for Muskie and they ended up have about 22 follows and landed two Muskie and one 17-inch Smallmouth. The also caught three Pike within an hour on Little Vermilion Lake including a nice 36-incher by Aaron. Fourth day was a FABULOUS day as they caught 44 Northern Pike between 28 to 33-inches, and 25 Smallmouth between 14 to 17-inches. Aaron had the hot hand working the X-Rap a certain way producing 37 Pike and 21 Smallies himself. WOW, what a GRRRRREAT day fishing. Fifth day was another great day as they caught 30 Northern Pike, 7 Smallmouth Bass, and a Musky. Aaron caught the Musky and it was a beauty measuring 41-inches and Michele came up with a HUGE 40-inch Master Angers Award Northern Pike. WOW, what a day in the beautiful Canadian Wilderness. Sixth and final day Aaron and Michele caught 23 Northern Pike and 7 Smallmouth Bass with Aaron finishing on a high note landing an 18-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. Both were sad to leave and hope to return in 2010.
Joe Denise from Palos Heights, IL and Bob Nelson from Elmwood Park, NJ were returning to Fireside Lodge for their 12th consecutive year. First day fishing Bob started them out right by catching an 18-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass on his very first cast. That got the ball rolling as they experienced a fish feeding frenzy during several times throughout the day catching many Smallmouth Bass in the 14 to 17.5-inch range, and several Northern pike. The highlight of the day was when Bob, as he was reeling in a 14 to 15-inch Smallie had a Musky attack the Bass. It let go and attacked it three different times resulting in Joe taking a great photo of the Muskie with the Smallmouth in it’s mouth right by the boat. Very exciting fish happening for Joe and Bob. Second day was action, action, action, saying that they caught fish everywhere they went, almost all being Northern Pike except for Joe hooking and landing a Master Anglers Award Smallmouth of a lifetime measuring 20-inches with a giant girth. Bob had his second unusual happening in two days as when fighting a Northern Pike it jumped into the boat landing in the back splash well, became unhooked and jumped back in the water in-between their 40HP and 6HP engines. What’s for tomorrow Bob???? These two had fabulous fishing for Smallmouth Bass catching 14 to 17.5-inch Smallies on a variety of lures from surface to jigging techniques and everything in-between. The action stopped after they had lunch, and I advised them to fish through lunch next time. Fourth day was a terrific Smallmouth Bass day for these two as they caught many Smallmouth Bass between 15 and 17.5-inches and Bob landed another Master Angers Award Smallmouth measuring 18.5-inches. They also had a lot of Pike action as Joe lost four Rattlin Raps, his lure of choice for the active Smallmouth, to the toothy critters. Bob used mostly surface lures, the Chug Bug being his favorite for the day. Fifth day was a tremendous Northern Pike day for these two as the caught one Pike after another all day long. They kept moving to different spots and just kept catching fish. At suppertime they could not give me a number because it was too hard to keep an accurate count, but said the action was non-stop. Sixth and final day they ended their trip on a high note having another good day catching Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike. However, the biggest catch of the week was the wonderful time spent between two long time friends. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to spend this special time together.Father and son Roy and Ross Lagerblade from Rock Island, IL and Crestwood, KY were returning to Fireside Lodge for their fourth consecutive year. While fishing a few hours before supper on the day of arrival they caught many Northern Pike to get started off right. First day was a Great day for these two as they caught well over 30 Northern Pike and had lots of other fish activity with follows and lost fish. Second day was off to Cedarbough to fish for Musky. As they were pulling up to the dock Roy told me to ask Ross how the fishing was not him. Well Ross ended up catching two Muskie 28, and 36-inches and a big Northern Pike at 37.5-inches. Third day was another dedicated Musky day. The day was sunny and warm which is not ideal for Musky. They sure found Musky have many follows but no takers. Both still had a fabulous day fishing together and just seeing that many Muskie. Fourth day was a GREAT day catching for these two as they caught well over 35 Northern Pike, and Roy said they would have doubled that number had they counted all the fish that came off near the boat during the fight. They also had two double catches, and Ross got some great photos of a HUGE beaver swimming, and then displaying displeasure with them intruding its home turf. Fifth and final day their plan was to search for BIG fish and Ross was hoping for rain and cloud cover to increase their odds. They caught plenty of fish but the lunkers did not show up, and Ross did get his rain as he was pulling up to the dock at the days end. Better late than never? Both had a fabulous trip making another set of father and son memories, a tradition they started 28 tears ago and hope to continue for many years to come.

Well, that's it for this weeks Fireside Lodge Fishing News Report, Please stay tuned for next weeks report. Until then "Keep On Fish'n" Alan
Special Note From Alan & Audrey: It is hard to believe it is the end of another fishing season for Audrey and I at Fireside Lodge, and even harder to grasp it concludes our 20th year owing and operating Fireside Lodge. What was once a talked about dream of ours became a reality because of us 20 years ago, but the success of Fireside Lodge during those 20 years is because of you, our guests. After each season ends so does the morning chatter in the dining room planning a fishing day, the sound of the boats leaving the dock, the excitement of the fish stories told in the lodge at the end of the day, and the lights in camp after dark fall as guests rest in anticipation of what tomorrow might bring. We realized after the end of our very first season, as silence comes over the lodge, cabins, and grounds that it is “YOU” our guests that bring life to Fireside Lodge. For some 2009 was their first year fishing at Fireside Lodge and for others it was their second, fifth, tenth, fifteenth, and even nineteenth year. For guests with a longer tenure you have seen many changes and improvements over the years of which Audrey tried to capture in the 20 year anniversary DVD she produced. If for some reason you have not received a DVD and would like to receive one we would be glad to mail a copy to you with no costs to you. Just email me and let me know. It would be impossible for me to write about all of the experiences, happenings, special relationships, and memories that we have had over the 20 wonderful years at Fireside Lodge, and for that Audrey and I want to give “Special Thanks” to all of our guests. We also look forward to seeing some of you in 2010 as we begin another season moving towards another 20 years.
Thank you very much for all the memories. Sincerely, Audrey and Alan

Fireside Lodge Fishing News/Photo Report 8/29 to 9/5 2009

Fireside Lodge Fishing News/Photo Report 8/29 to 9/5 2009
Hello From Fireside Lodge in Northwest Ontario, Canada
Weather this week in one word was absolutely “GORGEOUS”.
Ernie, Marilynn, and son Rick Ernest from St Charles, MO were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time. First day on the water they had a great fishing and catching day landing many Northern Pike with numbers somewhere in the 50-plus range. Ernie, after Rick hooked the first Pike of the day, ignored his son Rick as he was fighting the fish so he would lose it, which he did. Well, Ernie’s trick backfired as Rick hooked up on six more in a row. Second and third days they
concentrated on Smallmouth Bass and they all caught a lot of Smallmouth Bass each day, most in the 14 to 16.5-inch range. Rick also caught a 30-inch Musky, and Marilynn had a fabulous time catching Smallmouth in the beautiful weather I personally arranged for her. Fourth and final day was another gorgeous day, which they spent Northern Pike fishing and did fantastic. They caught Northern Pike, non-stop, all day long, and Marilynn topped Ernie and Mark as she caught most of the bigger Pike. All had a great time as they enjoyed a nearly perfect four days all being sunny and in the low 70’s.
Harry and Susan Vilsack from Pittsburgh, PA, Brother-In-Law Larry Schiffenhaus from Essex Fells, NJ, and Larry’s grandson Brenden Gilson from Montclair, NJ were returning to Fireside Lodge for the seventh consecutive year. First day on the water they caught some fish and spent some family time at Twin Falls enjoying this natural wonder. They were able to spot some wildlife including a Bald Eagles Nest. Second day they had a very active day catching many Northern Pike, and Brenden caught his very first Northern Pike ever along with many others. All caught so many Pike that Susan at suppertime told me that they were “Piked Out”. With that the decision was to fish for Smallmouth Bass on their third day. After a slower morning they all enjoyed cooking and eating a shore lunch of walleye, potatoes, and beans cooked on a rock point overlooking the lake. After lunch the fishing picked right up as they caught a lot of Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike, and also had a good number of follows from the toothy critters. Fourth day was a banner day for all as they caught many Northern Pike all day long between 25 to 33-inches, and Susan had the catch of the day, and probably all of their lives, as she hooked and landing a huge 48-inch Clear Muskie. There was a slight mishap when trying to lift the fish up, however Larry’s quick response with his camera from the other boat enabled them to have a photo of Susan’s Master Anglers Musky catch. Harry said it was their best day ever. Fifth and final day brought more the same for Harry and Susan as Harry caught a lot of Northern Pike, all on the same lure, which Harry purchased for everyone in the morning. It was Larry’s turn today for a HUGE fish as he caught a MONSTER Master Anglers Award Tiger Musky measuring 45-inches. WOW, What a catch, but with this group it’s not just the fishing and catching of fish. It’s the whole experience of the wilderness, enjoying family time together at suppertime, doing puzzles, having great conversation on their deck every evening, and just being together as a family, and we are thrilled they choose Fireside Lodge as one of their family memory making vacation destinations.
Bob Babcock and Jane Waldron from Midland, MI were fishing at Fireside Lodge for the 11th consecutive year. First day was very productive catching some good size Northern Pike and Bob landed a 34-inch Pike with a 40-inchers body, being very fat and round. They had a lot of follows and Bob lost four nice fish as they were running trough the weeds. Second day had these two catching a lot of Northern Pike and Jane caught a 34-inch Pike, and had two very large fish get off during the battle. The focal point on their third day was on Musky fishing and did they ever find fish, having countless follows. Jane decided to try jigging for these fussy feeders and she ended up landing and very heavy 35-inch Musky and caught a Master Anglers Award, wide body 18-inch Smallmouth Bass. Fourth day was a very good day for Northern Pike 25 to 32-inches, and Jane caught the fish of the day landing a massive 45-inch Tiger Musky on a surface lure. WOW, what a ‘Terrific” catch and a fabulous must see photo. This put Jane in the position to accomplish a fishing feat never attained at Fireside Lodge during our 20-year tenure. That is to catch a Master Anglers Award fish in all three categories of Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, and Musky. Jane only had one day on the water left, however all it would take is one cast. Fifth and final day no records were broken but they had a great day catching Northern Pike of all sizes, and Jane did catch the biggest fish of the day being 34-inch Pike. They enjoyed their last Canadian Wilderness moments on and off the water, and also made reservations for the same week in 2010.

Father and son Joe and Troy Nowiczewski from The Woodlands and Spring, TX returned to Fireside Lodge for the second visit. Fabulous first day with plenty of Northern Pike action as they caught over 30 Pike, Joe landing at least 20, and Troy being a strictly fly fisher, caught 10 on streamers and poppers and missed that many on the surface. Second day was fabulous as they caught Northern Pike, Joe caught his first Musky, and Troy had some great fly-fishing landing several Smallmouth Bass 17 to 17.5-inches and landed a Master Anglers Award Smallmouth at 18-inches. Third day was all Joe as he seemed to catch most of the Northern Pike including one HUGE 35-incher plus he had a GIANT Musky on until a clump of weeds got between him and the fish, and the lure popped loose as the Muskie ran through the weeds, O’ Well That’s Fishing. Fourth day Joe and Troy had a GREAT day catching Northern Pike up to 30-inches, and Troy caught six on his fly rod. Fifth and final day they were in search of the Big fish and found some good size fish with Joe landing a 32 and 33-inch heavy Pike, and Troy got into some Smallmouth 16.5 to 17.5-inches. The Monster eluded them this trip just as it does many anglers, which keeps us all coming back to try again. Joe and Troy had a wonderful father and son re-connect fishing vacation, and hope to return again in the near future. Thanks for making your special memories together at Fireside Lodge.

Fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time were Tim and Theresa Moran from Schaumburg, IL They had great success on their first day fishing as they caught some very nice Northern Pike and many Smallmouth Bass, and each had smiles ear to ear in the dinning room as they were telling me of their days experiences. Second day they decided to do our “Jungle Cruise Ride” which is a long ride through a creek to access two other lakes. Just the beauty of the creek was worth the trip for these two. They had a fabulous day catching countless Northern Pike, and Theresa caught a very large Smallmouth Bass measuring almost 18-inches. Both had fabulous fun on the 75-degree nearly perfect day, and the smiles on their faces while telling their adventures of the day told the whole story, without having to say a thing. Third and final day had Tim and Theresa fishing the upper arm of Little Vermilion Lake so they could lunch at, and enjoy one of the natural wonders we have to offer, Twin Falls. They had a wonderful time seeing and photographing Twin Falls, on this beautiful day, and afterwards got into a lot of fish. Tim said for a little over an hour things were fast a furious, Theresa said they caught a smorgasborg, meaning they caught Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike and Tim caught his first ever Musky. Not bad for first timers fishing at Fireside Lodge. When returning they decided not to eat in the dinning room and finish their last evening sitting at the end of our dock to watch the beautiful sunset. So we packed their meals to go so they could enjoy the beautiful show over the western horizon, with the Loons call in the background, that we have the good fortune to see and hear every night at Fireside Lodge.
Tim and Theresa left all smiles hoping to return in 2010 or in the very near future.

Fireside Lodge Fishing News/Photo Report 8/22 to 8/29 2009

Fireside Lodge Fishing News/Photo Report 8/22 to 8/29 2009

Hello From Fireside Lodge in Northwest Ontario, Canada.
This week started on Saturday and Sunday with gorgeous weather and highs between 70-75 degrees, sunny, with just a slight breeze. The weather stayed nice temperature wise and we missed a huge storm threatening to dump almost two inches of rain on us, and only received some showers towards the end of the week

Matt Holesinger from Roscoe, IL returned to Fireside Lodge with his parents Donald and Audrey from Fulton, IL for their third consecutive year to target our fabulous Smallmouth Bass fishing. Day of arrival while fishing for four hours before super they caught over 30 Smallmouth Bass, and Don had a blast landing a 32.5 in fat Northern Pike on his light weight Smallmouth rig. Fantastic start for these three. First full day fishing these three portaged and caught 35 to 40 Smallmouth Bass all between 15 to 17.5-inches. Second day was even better as they again caught about 35 Smallmouth Bass, but they caught some bigger fish with Audrey landing one 18.5-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth and Don caught two dandy 19-inch Master Anglers Award Smallies. They also caught a lot between 16 to 17.5-inches. Third day was not as active as the first two but they still caught 30 fish, 15 Smallmouth Bass and 15 Northern Pike, before suppertime, and Don caught two more Master Anglers Award Smallmouth measuring 18.5 and 18-inches. Fourth and final day was gangbusters as they caught over 65 Smallmouth Bass landing a lot of BIG Smallies in the 16 to 17.5-inch range, and Audrey caught an 18.5 and a GIANT 19-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass. It was a fabulous finish to a wonderful family fishing trip loaded with memories that will last their lifetime, and thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to enjoy a family fishing vacation.

Davie and Jeff Norkiewicz from Tinley Park, and Plainfield, IL returned to Fireside Lodge for their ninth time. First and second day they had great days catching Northern Pike and a few Smallmouth. The pike were very active on their second day catching a lot of them on surface lures, and Dave landed a 34-inch Muskie and two Master Anglers Award Smallmouth measuring 18.5 and 19-inches.. After seeing a swirl on the surface Dave cast a lure to the area, hitting it dead on, and as soon as the lure hit the water the 19-inch Smallie slammed it. Dave repeated the same act on two consecutive days catching a Pike the second time. Third day had these two fighting strong winds Muskie fishing to no avail, but it was not for lack of effort, They did catch some Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass later in the day when the winds calmed. Fourth day was all Muskie fishing and mostly Musky catching as they had numerous Muskie follows landing three, a 34-icnh by Dave and a 35 and 36-incher by Jeff. All were classic barred Musky with heavy girth. Dave also caught a fat 34-inch Northern Pike and a BIG 17.5-inch Smallmouth that was just about as wide as it was long. Great day Musky fishing for these two brothers. Fifth day was fabulous as they landed over 50 Northern Pike, making contact with over 100, and Jeff said the action was non-stop all day long, saying he had never experienced anything like it before. Sixth and final day was looking for BIG fish, and today the fish were moving as they had a lot of follows, caught some medium size fish, and Jeff landed a very large 37-inch Tiger Muskie. Great way to finish another memorable fishing trip between brothers.

Ed Burns from College Station, TX and Todd Smith from McKinney, Tx were back fishing at Fireside Lodge having come every year for the last 10 years. First day fishing these two did well catching Northern Pike. Second day they set out after breakfast to catch Smallmouth Bass and they did catch some good Smallies, but also got into some toothy critters with Ed loosing a MONSTER Pike right at boat-side. Third day they caught a lot of Northern Pike 28 to 33-inches, and also got into a lot of BIG Smallmouth Bass 16 to 17.5-inches, with both catching Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. Ed’s was 18.5-inches and Todd caught three between 18 and 19-inches. Fourth and final day they caught some Northern Pike in the 28 to 33-inch range and again caught a bunch of Smallmouth Bass, most being 15 to 17-inches. Todd fished after supper by himself catching 4 more Pike and 4 Smallmouth Bass. Both had a great four day stay at Fireside Lodge and hope to return.

Returning to Fireside Lodge for his tenth time was Paul Letourneau from North Oaks, MN with good friend Spencer Olson for his third consecutive year fishing at Fireside Lodge. On the day of arrival after supper these two got right to it by catching 7 Northern Pike and Spencer lost a monster after it surfaced, took a strong run and the hook just popped lose. Frustrating but very fun to have the opportunity to catch a BIG fish. Second day they were met with severe weather conditions, having a cold front with high winds and more than a half inch of rain. They still managed to catch a dozen Northern Pike. Second day turned around being a beautiful day in the upper 60’s, sunny and a nice breeze. They spent most of their day chasing Musky getting some BIG follows and also catching a few Northern Pike up to 31-inches. Third day was a portage day, and they had fabulous weather and fabulous fishing as they caught 36 Northern Pike. As Spencer said the portage, being the only boat on the lake, and the amazing beauty of the surroundings were just as special as catching the 36 Northern Pike. They also saw a Cow Moose swimming across the lake and as they approached it the Moose tried to get up a rocky steep bank so they backed off and then they heard a calf on the other side calling for the Cow Moose. Fabulous experience for Paul and Spencer, while having a great day catching Northern Pike. Fourth day they were off to another lake to discover new water and ending up having a GREAT fishing day catching 53 total fish, 15 Walleye between 20 and 23 inches and 38 Northern Pike. Fifth and final day was also great as they caught 30 to 35 Northern Pike. Both had a great trip and hope to return in 2010.

George Marshall from Sparta, TN returned to Fireside Lodge for his 10 fishing trip in 11 years bringing good friend Leon Myers from Prince Frederick, MD for his first “Canadian Wilderness Fishing Experience”. First day was a great day as they caught 30 to 35 Northern Pike up to 30-inches and some nice Smallmouth, with Leon landing the biggest just under 18-inches. George said he thought Leon was trying to stretch the bass to qualify for a Master Anglers Award fish. George was kidding of course??? Second day was a fabulous day for these two as they caught Northern Pike and Smallmouth and made contact with Muskie. In fact Leon had a huge Muskie engulf his lure right by the boat, and Leon set the hook so hard that it pulled the fishes head out of the water the Musky simply spit his lure back at him. George caught one 34-inch Musky and lost four Muskie or Pike. BIG Pike were caught at 38-inches, and George landed a MONSTER 42-inch Master Anglers Award Northern Pike. Third day these two did great catching many good size Smallmouth Bass and landed one nice Musky. Fourth day was a portage lake for Muskie and Smallmouth. They had a great day catching a lot of Smallmouth Bass and landing one Musky. Fifth and final day was a tremendous finish catching more Northern Pike thought possible by 5:00PM. After catching many Pike and their number started to accumulate they decided to call it a day at 100 Northern Pike caught or at 5:00 PM, which ever came first. Well they caught their 100-th Pike at a few minutes before five making for a near perfect ending to a fabulous fishing trip, full of memories made between two very good friends. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to enjoy your special and valuable vacation time.

Fireside Lodge Fishing News/Photo Report 8/15 to 8/22 2009

Fireside Lodge Fishing News/Photo Report 8/15 to 8/22 2009

Hello from Fireside Lodge in Northwest Ontario
This was an on again and off again week weather wise as we had a nice day in the low 70’s, a cool rainy day after some thunderstorms, then a beautiful sunny day in the mid-70’s, followed by another cold front with rain, followed by two very nice sunny days. That’s weather for ya.
Albert(Bert)Zimbrich, Dale Clement both from Knoxville, TN, Jacob (Bud) Zeigler from Washington, DC, and Joe Gabbard from Sterling, VA were fishing at Fireside Lodge for their first time. Bert, Joe, and Dale during a few hours before supper, on their day of arrival, caught 7 Northern Pike and a Smallmouth Bass. First full day fishing this group said they caught plenty of Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike and both Bert and Joe caught a 30-inch plus Muskie. Second day was fabulous fishing as they all caught over 100 Northern Pike, Bert landed two Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass and Dale caught one all being 18.5-inches. The day was so good that at times Pike were charging out of the water after lures being lifted out of the water at the end of a retrieve. Third day was very windy with rain on a off which made for tough conditions, but they still caught some Pike up to 33-inches. Fourth day was a fabulous and fun day as Bert and Dale had what seemed to be endless action landing 60-plus Northern Pike, and Bud and Joe caught 30 Northern Pike and 18 Smallmouth Bass. The Smallmouth were special in that 12 of them were 17-inches or larger, and Bud landed two Master Anglers Award Smallmouth one being a GIANT 19.5-inches and the other was a very girthy 18.5-inches. It was Bud’s last day so he finished in glory and fame. On the fifth day the remaining three were met with a North Eastern cold front and heavy rain which brought them back to the dock well before noon and spent the rest of the day in the warm dry cabin. Fish caught were at a minimum as the lake conditions were severe, and temps reached only a high of 59 degrees. Sixth day had these three having a beautiful last day and Joe started off on his very first cast catching an 18.5-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass. That means all of the group caught a Master Anglers Award Smallmouth on their first fishing trip at Fireside Lodge. They also had some good morning action on Northern Pike wit Joe and Dale catching over 20, however they forgot their lunch back at the cabin and had to come back which broke their momentum. All had a great time fishing with friends and making memories and both Joe and Dale were talking about bringing their sons or grandsons back next time.
Here by referral were Jim Joyce from Fairgrove, MO, David Kroeger from Omaha, NE, and Steve Tegler from Lincoln, NE. Day of arrival these three got right to it and caught over 20 fish, a combination of Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike. First full day of fishing they did fantastic catching about 60 Smallmouth Bass and 10 Northern Pike. That’s a 70 fish day. Dave caught two Master Anglers Award Smallmouth and Steve had one all being 18.5-inches. Pink Senko worms was their magic bait for the day. Second day was also a great fishing day with a different mix as they caught 13 Walleye between 20 to 23-inches, a whole bunch of Pike, and one GIANT 20” Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass by Dave. Third day they had another great day, in search of BIG Muskie, catching Smallmouth Bass. On the Smallmouth side of this equation they caught well over 50 with a lot in the 14 to 16-inch class, and a few 17 to 17.5-inches, and one Master Anglers Award 18-incher by Dave. They also had Muskie follows, landed one nice size Musky, and Steve lost a monster that did not even know it was hooked for the first few moments. Fourth and fifth days were spent searching for Big fish of any kind. They had their opportunity with Muskie, having hooked a few but lost them in the battle. In the Smallmouth category they caught 50 plus each day with lots in the 15 to 16.5-inch range, and a lot 17 to 17.75-inches. Dave was the Master Angler of Master Fishers as he landed five Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass from 18 to 19.5-inches. This made for two great fishing days. Sixth and final day they caught so many Pike they quit fishing for them, and tried to find some bigger Smallmouth Bass, which Steve did it again catching another Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass which made a total of 8 for the week. All went home having a great week fishing and being away from work.Returning to Fireside Lodge for his second time was Tom Strachen with sons Ryan and Ross and son-in-law Tom Stenger from Akron, Oh, Carrboro, NC, Columbus, Oh, and Copley, OH. First day was great as all caught some nice Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass with Tom Stachen landing the largest Smallmouth at 17.5-inches, and Ryan, Ross, and Tom Stenger all caught Pike in the 30-inch plus range. Second day was a gangbusters Pike day as they caught over 60 Northern Pike between them, and had lots of other action with lost fish and follows. Third day had Tom Strachen and Ryan catching mostly Northern Pike and one 15-inch Smallmouth, while Ross and Tom Stenger had a fabulous day as they found a secret bait in orange twister tails. Yes, that’s right I did say orange. They ended up catching over 40 Northern Pike and had such a blast they lost track of time and missed supper in the dinning room. They did not miss supper itself as we packed their meals and had them waiting in their cabin for them. Fourth an final day was another great day fishing and catching as Tom and Tom Teamed up for about 18 Northern Pike, and brothers Ryan and Ross caught well over 30 and landed a lot of larger fish. All had a wonderful family fishing trip making memories together and talk of coming back next year with more family was the topic of discussion before departing.

Returning to Fireside Lodge after 20-years were father Gary Nichols from Naperville, IL and his son Mark from Seattle, Washington. First day they were met with cold front conditions, high winds, and showers. It took a little while but they started catching fish landing some Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike in the 28 to 32-inch range. Second day was great as they caught over 30 Northern Pike. Third day had these two out after the noon hour choosing to wait for the weather to clam down a bit. In four hours they caught both Northern Pike and a few nice Smallmouth despite the severe cold front conditions with high winds and rain. Fourth and final day was a great day as they caught a lot of fish being a combination of Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass, with Mark catching some of his best Smallmouth ever. Both had a terrific time making memories together and wished stay another day.Walt LaCasse from Minnetonka, MN who has been coming to Fireside Lodge every year since 1996, and twice a year for the last seven years was returning for his second trip this year with his daughter Alyssa and his 7-year old grandson Keeghan. On their day of arrival before supper after fishing just a few hours they all caught fish and some BIG fish. On Keeghan’s third cast he hooked and landed an 18-inch bulging Master Anglers Award Smallmouth Bass. WOW!!!! Pressure was off Grandpa within minutes of leaving the dock. Alyssa caught some nice Northern Pike and was a great assist after Walt hooked into a Monster Northern Pike. During the battle Walt gave some quick verbal instructions to Alyssa on how to use a fish cradle, and Alyssa did a fabulous job cradling Walt’s GIANT 40-inch Master Anglers Award Northern Pike. What a great team effort and unbelievable start to their three day fishing trip, and this all happened before supper. Just think of the fact that 7-year old Keeghan’s first Smallmouth he ever saw was an 18.5-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth, and the first Northern Pike he ever laid eyes on was a HUGE 40-inch Master Anglers Award Pike. Unbelievable start to their three day fishing trip. First full day of fishing brought them a cold front with on and off rain and wind. Even with these conditions Keeghan stayed out all day long with Alyssa and Grandpa. Keeghan caught three Northern Pike and Walt caught a BIG FAT 35-inch Northern Pike. That evening Keegan wanted to go fishing again, so they did for an hour and caught three more Pike. Second day was a super day for these three as the caught 40 plus Northern Pike and Walt caught a 19.5-inch and an 18.5-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. Both Alyssa and Keeghan caught a lot of Northern Pike. A funny story is when Walt was reeling in a Pike in the high 20-inch range, as Keeghan saw it he said “Grandpa your fish is a smaller one”. I guest that’s what anyone would think if the first Northern Pike you ever saw in your life was a 40-inch Monster, that would qualify for most fishers Pike of a lifetime. Third day they woke up to a North Eastern cold front with a lot of rain. An attempt go fishing was made mid-morning but they returned as quick as the heavy rain did. Not fishing again until after supper, when all three went out for their last fish for the trip, they caught some nice Northern Pike and enjoyed their last look at the beautiful surroundings we are located in at Fireside Lodge. All departed very happy with wonderful memories made between three generations, and before leaving Walt reserved his second set of dates for 2010. Thanks for choosing Fireside Lodge to make you memories with family and friends.Father and son Mike and Andy Pritzl from Caledonia and Racine WI. Returned to Fireside Lodge for their fifth trip. They showed up with smiles and ready to go despite the rainy cold front conditions. Before supper these two, in just a few hours caught 10 Northern Pike and after supper they caught 2 Smallmouth Bass, 3 more Pike up to 31-inches and Andy had a Musky on estimated at 35-inches, but the big fish popped its head out of the water and spit Andy’s lure back at him. First full day of fishing was fabulous weather and terrific fishing, Andy catching 40 and Mike 39-Northern Pike for a total of 79 before supper. They also caught 7 Smallmouth two at 15-inches, one 17, one 17.5, and Andy caught a GIANT 19.5-inch Master Anglers Award Smallmouth. In the evening they caught three more Northern Pike and Andy landed a 34-inch Tiger Musky. Second day they did well catching 8 Northern Pike most being 28 to 31-inches and a Smallmouth Bass. In the evening they had fun surface fishing with poppers having some strikes and Mike caught a nice Smallmouth. Third and final day turned into another Pike day as they caught 26 Pike with most being the range of 28 to 37.5-inches with Andy catching the 37.5-incher, his personal best. They also caught 6 Smallmouth Bass. Both had a blast and made another set of father and son memories at Fireside Lodge.
